0.1  Network Guide - Preview
The purpose of this guide is to help you with the configuration of your network.

1.1  Network Guide - Identify Your Configuration
First important step is to identify how you are connected to the internet. Your ability to host and join sessions depends on what kind of hardware you use to connect to the internet .If u are normally connected to the internet [without router/proxy] you don't have to change anything and F1RST3 will work "out of the box". You might need to do some additional configuration steps if u use a Router, Firewall or Windows XP.

2.1  Network Guide - Windows XP Firewall

Windows XP contains a build in firewall that needs to be configured / disabled, easy way to find out how to do this please watch the video or consult the windows XP help[click: start / help] and search for "firewall", A detailed guide how to disable the build in firewall will be found there.

Note:
The Windows XP Firewall is only enabled by default if you have installed Windows XP SP2 [Service Pack2]

3.1  Network Guide - Windows Internet Connection Sharing

Windows build-in internet connection sharing [ICS] protocol is not recommended for online gaming. If you are in the need of a software router we recommend to use Kerio's Winroute. Winroute is a software based router that makes port mapping possible and easy to manage.

Note:
You will only need ICS or kerio's winroute if you are connecting to the internet trough another PC.

5.1  Network Guide - Configuring Your Router

Routers, basic info:

If you started reading this you probably connect to the internet by using a router and have no clue how to set it up right? Basically a router is a piece of electronic that allows you to connect multiple PC's to the internet. In the picture below you see a router with 2 PC's [ PC1&PC2 ] connected. In this situation you should be able to JOIN sessions in F1RST3 without any problem. If you also want to HOST sessions your router needs to "know" witch PC you host from. Your router needs to be configured so that it will send the signals from the internet to the correct PC.This is called "port-forewarding".Those settings needs to be done in your router.

Only 4 steps are required to Setup your router:
Step 1: Find out how to get into your router setup screen
Step 2: Find out your Lan IP Address [Address from PC you want to host from]
Step 3: Find out what ports you need to forward,
Step 4: Put all this info into your router setup screen.

Step1: How do i access my router?
There are many different routers on today's market, so it's VERY important to find out EXACTLY what router you have. Look at the bottom of it for a label.
To configure your router you need to access it. 99% of all routers can be accessed by your webbrowser. You need to type a specific address in your webbrouwser to get into the router settings screen [ for example: 10.0.0.138]. This address is not the same for all routers. You must consult the manual or manufacturer web site of your router to find out this address. Also a login and password may be required.

[Example]

Step 2: Find out your Lan IP Address [Address from PC you want to host from]
Next step is to figure out the IP address of the PC you want to host from [better known as LAN IP (local area network) or "internal"IP]. it's pretty easy:
In Windows go: Start / Run and type: cmd [Enter], A dos box will pop up. In this dos box type: ipconfig/all ...a box like this should pop up now:

In this example you see that the LAN [ Internal] IP is 192.168.0.140

Step 3: Find out what ports you need to foreward,
The ports you need to foreward are easy to find out by consulting the port mapping table of this guide, See section 4.1 on this page.

Step 4: Put all this info into your router setup screen
Now we have all info to set up our router. Open your router setup screen and search for "Virtual Server" or "NAT". This is the place where you have to setup the ports.
[As example i took a D-link 614 router].You see some fields you need to file now:

Name: Not really important what you put in this field, for example call it: TCP port 34447
Public IP : only some routers will ask for this, if asked leave that field blanco.[ Also called "external" IP or "WAN" IP] .
Private IP: here you put the LAN IP[also called "Internal IP" or "Private IP"] of the PC you want to host from.
Protocol Type: here you put in the protocol TCP or UDP [See the port mapping table in section 4.1 of this guide]
Private Port: your router sends the signal to this port of your LAN PC[See the port mapping table in section 4.1 of this guide]
Public Port : This is the port the router gets the signal from the Internet from.[See the port mapping table in section 4.1 of this guide],Note:public and private port should be the same.

Note: Repeat this procedure for ALL ports to host.

[In this example picture you see port 80 TCP forwarded to lan PC with IP address 192.168.0.100]:

[Example]

That's all for now, good luck configuring your router !
